Keeping experienced operators sharp on laws and regulations
In short
How do you keep experienced bridge and lock operators sharp in a field where the rules are constantly evolving? For NNVO, Preludens developed a refresher that challenges experience rather than re-teaching the basics.
The challenge
Operators active for years hold a lot of experience, but rules and insights keep shifting. How do you refresh their core knowledge without falling back on a traditional, unchallenging refresher course?
The design question
How do we challenge experienced professionals so it becomes visible where knowledge has faded and where reinforcement is needed — while keeping engagement high?
Our approach
In collaboration with Drift Learning (content and learning objectives), Preludens designed the storyline and MicroGames. Short, interactive MicroGames challenge operators to make choices under time pressure, with direct feedback on every mistake. Storytelling in comics translates complex rules into recognisable scenarios operators can relate to their work.
The route
The training consists of 14 learning objectives, worked out as 14 separate scenarios with linked MicroGames. Thanks to the modular setup — around 15 minutes per objective, 2 to 4 hours in total — operators set their own pace and order via the NNVO learning platform.
The experience
After the online training comes a practice day. Using discussion sheets — visual cards with scenarios and five focused questions — participants discuss in small groups the grey areas where rules are not clear-cut. Objectives in the morning, practical application in the afternoon: this creates a deep dialogue.
The outcome
After two successful pilot days, guided and tested by NNVO's trainers, the refresher has been refined and is ready for broader use. Experienced operators keep their knowledge current and are better prepared for an ever-changing field.
Insight
The interplay between MicroGames and storytelling keeps learning dynamic and practice-oriented, fostering not only knowledge retention but also critical thinking and problem-solving.
